Abraham’s blessings are mine
Abraham’s blessings are mine
I am blessed in the morning
I am blessed in the evening
Abraham’s blessings are mine
If you grew up in an African church, you probably sang this song every time the offering was collected haha
*I have no affiliation to Pastor Chris or his ministry, nor do I endorse it; this is the only version of this song I could find online*
Most of the time we sing christian songs without letting the Words of God they contain minister to us.
I recently read Romans 4:13-16 and was excited to find out that there is a biblical basis to this song.
[13] For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith. [14] For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. [15] For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression. [16] That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring—not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, (Romans 4:13-16 ESV)
So let me quickly break this down; the promise that God gave to Abraham came through faith, and depends on faith in God (verse 13). If the promise depends on faith in God, then the promise rests on the grace of God (verse 16). If the promise depends on faith in God, and rests on the grace of God, then if we have faith in God and depend on the grace of God, then the promise is extended to us also (verse 16)!
I remember reading this and literally jumping out of my bed in excitement!
It also humbled me because it taught me that any promise that the Lord gives me has to be rooted in faith and the grace of God. Any promise that the Lord gives me will only be activated by faith and “worked out” by the grace of God. I can not strive or work to bring to pass any promise the Lord gave me, but I must fully rely and depend on the grace of God that works in me to bring his promise to pass. I hope you caught that?
We have a culture of receiving a prophecy and immediately starting to scheme and plan how we are going to make that prophecy come to pass, but this is wrong. The grace of the Lord will work through us to accomplish his word. As we submit to the grace of the Lord in faith, he will direct us in the right way for his word to come to pass. The steps of the righteous are ordered by God!
I also love how this also means that nothing about my salvation or walk with God is of my own doing. Even the promises he gives us are accomplished by himself. What rest and joy that should bring to our hearts! Abraham did not receive this promise and immediately go to war with neighbouring towns claiming the land, he received the promise and waited on the Lord in faith to give him the specific instructions that were necessary to bring this promise to pass. By the grace of the Lord, he obediently obeyed and the promise came to pass!
If you are waiting on any promises from the Lord, stand in faith and depend on His grace and He will surely bring them to pass.
Abraham’s blessing are yours because you share in the same faith and grace that he did…*awesome*
I managed to find some of the promises that God gave to Abraham and again, it excited me so much:
[1] Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go from your country and your kindred and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. [2] And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. [3] I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.” (Genesis 12:1-3 ESV)
[16] and said, “By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, [17] I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, [18] and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” (Genesis 22:16-18 ESV)
Notice that both of these promises are steeped in obedience, which can only come through righteous faith. We must believe God and it will be accounted to us for righteousness. That faith will active the grace of the Lord and the manifestation of His promise.
I am blessed because I have Christ Jesus, and because I share in the grace of the Lord, the same blessing of Abraham are mine!
Believe God, rest of His grace, and be excited…Abraham’s blessings are yours too!
